The inspiration for the Barbie doll, long before Barbie became a computer engineer, game developer, or robotics engineer, was a German doll named Bild Lili. Bild Lilli was an adult risqué gag gift for men based upon a comic-strip character featured in the German tabloid newspaper Bild Zeitung. Lilli, like Barbie, came with accessories and extra outfits that were also sold separately, including sports clothes, dresses, and suits. Lilli, in the comic strip, is a gold-digger who gets by in life by seducing wealthy male suitors and Lilli dolls were sold in adult toy stores, bars, and even tobacco shops throughout Europe.
